    What is i-Tree?

    i-Tree is a state-of-the-art, peer-reviewed software suite from the USDA Forest Service that provides urban forestry analysis and benefits assessment tools. The i-Tree Tools help communities of all sizes to strengthen their urban forest management and advocacy efforts by quantifying the structure of community trees and the environmental services that trees provide.

    A series of seminars about i-Tree are running throughout Australia and New Zealand in March 2010.

    2010 Asia-Pacific Tree Climbing Championships

    Auckland 21st March, 2010

    Tree climbers from the Asia-Pacific region go head-to-head in the tree climbing event that determines the bragging rights for the pacific region.

    The top men and women tree climbers from each country challenge each other in a “Masters Challenge” event, with the top male and female individuals getting a bonus spot in competing at the World event – the ISA’s ITCC.

    2010 Tree Climbing Competitions

    General Information

    New Zealand Arboricultural Association, in conjunction with STIHL, is running a series of four Regional Tree Climbing Competitions (TCCs) held across New Zealand.

    The competitions are open to persons involved in all aspects of arboriculture.

    The top climbers (plus special qualifiers and wildcards) from each of the Regional Tree Climbing Competitions will be eligible to compete in the STIHL / NZAA National Tree Climbing Championship (NTCC) held in November 2010, Auckland.

    This is your chance to meet and compete with fellow arborists, learn new techniques and see first-hand differing climbing styles.

    The overall winner of the NTCC will go on to represent New Zealand at the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) International Tree Climbing Championship (ITCC) held the following year in Brisbane, Australia during July 2011.

    The NZAA’s 2009 AGM was held on Friday 20th November at the Marlborough Convention Centre in Blenheim.

    Apart from the usual reviews – 2008 Minutes, President’s Report and budgets – the major outcome from the AGM was the election of several Executive Committe Members (6 of the 12 positions are renewed each year for two-year terms).

    and What the Changes Mean for Urban Tree Protection

    In September 2009, the government passed the Resource Management (Simplifying and Streamlining) Amendment Bill 2009 which, amongst other sweeping changes to environmental protection, means that Councils are prohibited from introducing general urban tree protection rules from 1st October 2009 and those with existing rules will be required to phase them out by 1st January 2012. In a surprise last minute change during the debating of the Bill, the ‘trimming’ of trees protected under general urban tree protection rules became a permitted activity as of 1st October 2009.
